For a long time Cambodia survived under its rich neighbors’ shadow. However, in the recent years, a lot of improvement has been seen as youth has started empowering itself. According to a general survey, the youth of Cambodia prefers entrepreneurship to studying. They find running their own business a lot more beneficial than opting for education, because it brings them instant money, making their economical position stronger. Cambodia is also known as one of the countries having “Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs”. According to the speed by which Cambodia is growing today, it is expected that within a decade it will be a totally difference country.
According to Kang Chandararot, an economical analyst of Cambodia, youth of the country are striving hard to have their small business running in order to support their parents and family. However, the youth is still facing a lot of problems due to the lack of industrial knowledge. Keeping this in mind, many different ventures have been started by different groups, one of them being AISEC, which runs an annual business planning competition to help the self employed youth of Cambodia. They have a 1000 Global Leaders Program that aims at training these individuals to have a better entrepreneurial mindset. With the help of that and the hard work of businesswomen and men of Cambodia, the future of entrepreneurship in Cambodia looks bright.
Women have a very important role to play in the entrepreneurship within Cambodia. NGOs such as Cambodian Women Entrepreneurship Association have played a vita role in empowering the women of Cambodia. 52% of the Cambodian population consists of women, and a shocking percentage of 70% of them are into the labor force, according to CWEA. Many of these women run their own small businesses, and some are running them at a major scale as well.
Despite the continuous struggle of finding equal rights and unavailability of education within Cambodia for women, they are rising as a force. CWEA was established in 2011 in order to help these women find ground. Within a few years, the group has become a strong force. CWEA’s objective is to provide women of Cambodia with a platform in business and to unite them together to raise their voice, which can then be heard by government. With the endless struggle of women of CWEA to have their voice heard, a lot has changed since 2011, and today women are a major role of business activities within the country.
Another such venture within Cambodia is Kaymu.com.kh. Promoting e-commerce within the country, Kaymu.com.kh is one of the biggest marketplaces of Cambodia. Over here, women and men with small business setups can add their products for free and market them online. Online shopping is becoming the next big thing within the country; hence places like Kaymu.com.kh have a very big crowd, which is making selling products easier.
